European Packaging Regulations Put Limburg Logistics Under Pressure

20.02.2025

POM Limburg Prepares Companies for Significant Changes

Companies in the industry and logistics sectors are facing a major challenge. The European “Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation” (PPWR), which aims to reduce packaging waste and promote reuse, requires them to thoroughly revise their processes. On March 11, POM Limburg, in collaboration with the Flemish logistics spearhead cluster VIL, Valipac, and UHasselt, will present the results of an impact analysis conducted on five major Limburg-based companies.

Stricter Regulations
The PPWR is part of the European ambition to transition to a circular economy. For companies, this means stricter standards for their packaging. From now on, packaging must be reusable or contain a higher percentage of recycled material. Mandatory labeling and reporting requirements are also included in the regulation. All of this not only leads to higher costs but also requires greater collaboration within the logistics chain.

The impact analysis, carried out by VIL and Valipac, examined five Limburg-based companies: H. Essers, Brabantia, Stanley Black & Decker, Power Tools Distribution (Atlas Copco), and Giardino. Based on this analysis, companies are being made aware of the types of packaging that may need to be adjusted to comply with the PPWR. The full results will be presented on March 11.

Collaborating to Innovate
According to Tom Vandeput, Deputy for Economy and Chairman of POM Limburg, the stricter regulations can also create opportunities. “The impact of this regulation is significant, but it encourages companies to develop innovative, sustainable solutions. Collaboration within the logistics chain will be essential. With the results of this study, we aim to support Limburg-based companies in preparing for the new challenges brought by the PPWR,” he stated.

Valipac, the recognized management organization for industrial packaging, plays a crucial role in guiding companies. The Materials and Packaging research group at UHasselt supports companies in their research and offers practical solutions for sustainable packaging.

Information Session on March 11
On Tuesday, March 11, POM Limburg will organize an information session in Alden-Biesen on the impact of the PPWR. During this event, the research findings will be explained. Valipac, VIL, and UHasselt will share their expertise and provide concrete advice to help companies adapt their packaging and logistics processes.
