On the Road to Circular Concrete

Circularity is gaining ground in the construction sector, but there is still a long way to go. To support companies in this transition, POM Limburg and Embuild Limburg bring together experts and entrepreneurs in the Circular Building Working Group. For an interactive session, they traveled to Genk, where they gained insights from Buildwise and visited pioneer Bioterra, with circular concrete as the central theme.

To inspire construction companies in sustainability, POM Limburg, in collaboration with Embuild Limburg, brings together businesses and other industry players in a working group. Several times a year, experts and entrepreneurs share their success stories and challenges, motivating each other in the transition towards a circular construction sector.

Circular Concrete
Concrete accounts for approximately 6% of Belgium’s annual CO₂ emissions. Although circular concrete, made from recycled aggregates, is already in use, large-scale implementation remains a challenge. To identify obstacles and accelerate progress, the Circular Building Working Group of POM Limburg and Embuild Limburg visited Thor Park for an interactive session in collaboration with research and innovation center Buildwise. The Buildwise Living Lab Circular Concrete collects and shares knowledge about circular concrete across the entire value chain.

Bioterra Leading the Way
Although current concrete standards allow for only up to 30% recycled aggregates, Limburg-based pioneer Bioterra already offers concrete with 100% recycled aggregates. The Genk-based company played a key role in establishing the soil remediation industry in Flanders and has since expanded its offerings to include high-quality recycled aggregates. Its site in Genk serves as a showroom for innovative solutions within the sector. The Circular Building Working Group had the opportunity to visit and tour the site, exploring various applications.

This session of the Circular Building Working Group was organized as part of the Boost Bouw Limburg project by Embuild Limburg and POM Limburg, with support from the Province of Limburg, Buildwise, and Bioterra.
