CCAM Proving Region

Smart and automated mobility (CCAM) helps us move towards traffic that is safer, smoother and more sustainable. From vehicles that communicate with one another to traffic lights that respond instantly to what is happening, and shuttles that connect seamlessly with public transport.

To roll out this kind of technology safely and reliably, thorough testing is essential – as are accessible, well-equipped test facilities.

Today, research is often fragmented, test projects remain small-scale and clear regulations are lacking. That is why there is a need for larger test zones, clear processes and cooperation across sectors and national borders. From that, the CCAM Proving Ground Region (CPR) emerges: a large-scale test area spanning the Flemish-Dutch border.

Objective

Through the Interreg Flanders–Netherlands project CCAM Proving Ground Region, companies, public authorities and knowledge institutions join forces to test, improve and scale up CCAM technology. This creates access to testing infrastructure, support and a network to develop, test and translate CCAM technology into policy.

Activities

To accelerate the development and application of CCAM technology, several activities are being set up.

  • Testing takes centre stage. This is done virtually, on a test track and on public roads.
  • Cross-border connectivity is being examined. This includes 5G and digital road information.
  • Existing initiatives are being brought together. Mobilidata (BE) and Talking Traffic (NL) thus reinforce one another in operation and impact.
  • Practical applications receive a quality boost. Examples include improved route guidance, targeted traffic information and faster green lights at intelligent traffic signals.
  • A Proving Region Excellence Centre is taking shape. This venue stimulates cooperation and further development.
